THE FRIGHTS
A couple of months after graduating from high school, Mikey Carnevale (vocals/guitar) and Richard Dotson (bass) got together as The Frights to play a one off 30 minute set as sort of a joke. The feeling they got from the crowd in their hometown of San Diego inspired them to become a “real” band almost in spite of themselves. Along the way, they recruited Marc Finn (drums) and released You Are Going To Hate This (produced by Zac Carper of FIDLAR) in February 2016. Jordan Clark (guitar) added to the band’s musical prowess in the ensuing year of touring around North America. The Frights signed to Epitaph in early 2018 and got to work on Hypochondriac. Like You Are Going To Hate This, the band’s third full-length was produced by Zac Carper of FIDLAR (who’s also produced albums for SWMRS and Dune Rats). But for Hypochondriac, Carnevale took a more deliberate and exacting approach to his songwriting, resulting in The Frights’ most nuanced work to date. After a sold out show at The Observatory North Park in their hometown of San Diego the same date as the release of the album, the band embarked on the Hypochondriac headline tour that is documented on their upcoming live album.

REMO DRIVE
To find their muse again, REMO DRIVE went back to where it all began: their parents’ basement. It had been a long time coming for the Paulson brothers – Erik (vocals, guitar) and Stephen (bass) – who formed Remo Drive in Bloomington, Minnesota, in 2013 and have since captivated audiences around the world with an earnest, idiosyncratic brand of indie-rock and two highly lauded albums: 2017’s Greatest Hits and 2019’s Natural, Everyday Degradation.

When the Paulsons stumbled across a Tascam recording desk on Facebook Marketplace in 2019, they thought it might make a nice starting point to demo songs for their then-forthcoming third LP. But $250 and a few weeks later, they found themselves fully entrenched in making the actual album itself. Not only that, but the safety and security of their parents’ home provided a welcome respite for the brothers, who have learned they’re most creative without a ticking clock and prying eyes peeking over their shoulders.

“Our workflow is naturally different from what most producers and studios like to do,” Erik explains. “We take things in our own weird approach and order. There’s a sense of privacy working at home. It doesn’t feel like you’re working with the door open during the incubation process.”

The resulting album, A PORTRAIT OF AN UGLY MAN (due out June 26 on Epitaph) finds the band truly in their element – both physically and sonically. Whereas the Paulsons filtered their buoyant songwriting through the concise lens of storytellers like Bruce Springsteen and The Killers on Natural, Everyday Degradation, LP3 is more spontaneous, awash in the same sort of acrobatic guitar arrangements and levity that made Greatest Hits such an underground favorite.

Monster Energy Presents – Cash Cobain

Party With Slizzy

Where: The Portal inside AREA15

Leading up to his highly-anticipated summer LP Play Cash Cobain, Billboard Rookie of the Month and 2024 XXL Freshman Cash Cobain is a multi-hyphenate rapper and producer known as the originator of “sample drill”, a sound that has transformed the identity of the genre in NYC by introducing 90s R&B, 2000s pop, and even gospel through his impeccable ear for chopping up recognizable samples and placing them over bouncy production. Cobain has been on a landmark “slizzy summer” single run with the Ice Spice-assisted (“Fisherrr” (feat. BaySwag) (40M Streams), who he’s slated to open for on her upcoming Y2K! World Tour, “Grippy” (12M Streams) with J.Cole, and most recently, “Rump Punch” (5M Streams). In June, Cobain secured his Billboard Hot 100 debut with Don Toliver’s new single “Attitude” alongside Charlie Wilson (56M Streams) following a career-minting 2023 year that saw him release his critically-acclaimed debut solo album Pretty Girls Love Slizzy with Giant Music. Previous months also saw Cobain produce Drake’s “Calling For You” (feat. 21 Savage), which debuted at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100, and PinkPantheress’ “Nice To Meet You” (feat. Central Cee), which debuted at #20 on the Billboard Hot 100 (he recently starred alongside her in a nationally-syndicated Apple commercial for the new MacBook), as well as DJ Travis Scott’s Cactus Jack x Audemars Piguet event. Cobain’s reach has spanned well beyond NYC, with his style of reinventing samples crossing the pond to the UK on the production for Central Cee’s 2021 track “Daily Duppy” (50M+ Streams). He’s also received co-signs from international superstars like Lil Uzi Vert & Frank Ocean, who used his song “JHOLIDAY” (5.2M Streams) in a Homer Ad. The success of his breakthrough production placement on B-Lovee’s 2021 hit song “My Everything” (42M+ Streams), on which he flipped a classic Mary J. Blige record, burst open the doors for New York drill to flourish – even inspiring Cardi B to revisit her Bronx roots and participate in the trend on Kay Flock’s “Shake It”. An auteur of the playful sexy drill sound he’s helped to pioneer as well as the Slizzy Movement that he’s now taking to mainstream heights, Cobain has since teased potential collaborations with Frank Ocean, Travis Scott, Lil Yachty and more –– a sure sign of the worldwide stardom soon to come.

OFF BOOK – THE IMPROVISED MUSICAL
Jessica McKenna and Zach Reino create a completely improvised musical in an attempt to combat the notion that musicals should be “carefully crafted” or “thought out at all.”

BIOGRAPHY:
Zach Reino and Jessica McKenna are a versatile musical comedy duo. They wrote and composed music for the WGA award-winning Peacock Series Baking It starring Maya Rudolph, Amy Poehler and Andy Samberg. The duo has also written songs and musical sketches for the hit animation show Rick and Morty, Party Over Here (a Fox sketch show produced by The Lonely Island), the Peacock series Pitch Perfect: Bumper In Berlin, Buzzfeed, FunnyOrDie and Nickelodeon. Zach and Jess are currently developing TV and Film projects with Amy Poehler’s Paper Kite Productions, David Wain (The State, Role Models, Wanderlust) and Elizabeth Banks’ Brownstone Productions. They also created and starred in Serious Music, a digital series for ABC.

Their improvised musical podcast Off Book has been praised by various online publications including Indie Wire, USA Today, Parade, AV Club and Splitsider and been featured at Comedy Central’s Clusterfest Festival, Moontower, the world renowned Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal, and the Netflix Is A Joke Festival in LA. Zach and Jess were listed as one of Vulture’s “Comedians You Should and Will Know” and in early 2019 they released their first full-length musical comedy album The Calendar Album with Comedy Dynamics.
