Pulse Portal is a 20-foot archway of iridescent light that changes depending on your perspective. The fully modular piece can be put together in twenty different ways, and is made from dichroic filters which transform depending on how the light hits them and their position in space. “It’s a lot like Schrödinger’s cat. The material is in two states at once and it doesn’t decide until you look at it,” McCarty explains. “I chose this material because it is the closest thing to an atomic probability cloud I have found on earth.”

One of seven children, Davis McCarty grew up in the Philippines and Thailand and assisted his parents with founding schools in remote cities. His art has been displayed at the Sears Tower, Union Station, and the Wright Museum of Art.
